Our Why
A Letter From Our Founder: Got Her Back Charity Origin Story

In the early days of the Women's National Football Conference (WNFC), our mission was clear: to create a platform where women and girls could see themselves as professional athletes, capable of achieving greatness in a sport traditionally dominated by men. However, it quickly became apparent that this mission needed to extend beyond the field. It wasn’t just about playing football; it was about showing young girls and women they belonged, that they were seen, and that they had a future in the sport they loved.

The spark for what would become the Got Her Back charity was ignited by a simple yet powerful email I received shortly after the WNFC launched. A proud father wrote to me about his 12-year-old daughter, who had fallen in love with tackle football and was inspired by the women in our league. While she was passionate about the sport, her father was concerned about the unique challenges she faced as she navigated puberty and the pressures of being the only girl on her team. He wanted her to know that she wasn’t alone, that other women and girls had walked this path before her and had not only survived but thrived.
This father’s words resonated deeply with me. They echoed the experiences of so many women in our league who, as young girls, had faced the isolation and bullying that often come with being the only girl on a "boys' team." These women had persevered against the odds, and in doing so, had paved the way for the next generation. But we realized that simply being examples on the field wasn’t enough; we needed to actively reach out and support these young girls in their journey.

And so, Got Her Back was born. From its inception, the charity has been about more than just mentorship, it’s about visibility, education, and giving a voice to girls who are often marginalized in their pursuit of football. We wanted these young athletes to know that they were seen, that they had a community of women who understood their struggles, and that they had a future in this sport.

Through partnerships with brands like Riddell Sports, Got Her Back has grown into the WNFC’s signature program, designed to inspire, support, mentor, and defend girls playing football. We’ve created an open line of communication where parents, friends, and allies can connect these girls with mentors who play football. Whether through letters of support, pen pals, or direct outreach, our goal is to ensure that every girl knows she has someone in her corner, that she has a team, even if she’s the only girl on the field.

The Got Her Back charity is a testament to what happens when you decide what you want to be and pursue it with unwavering determination.
