A Letter to Girls in Football: Every Obstacle an Opportunity, Tanner’s Story

Dear younger girls,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and great health. I’m writing to share an incredible journey that has a special place in my heart. As a fellow female football player in high school, I want to let you in on what an amazing and empowering experience it has been.

Let me assure you that being a female football player in high school is a thrilling and rewarding adventure. It's true the world of football has often been associated with boys, but let me tell you that it's not a home reserved for only them. As a girl on the field, you’ll discover a unique sense of empowerment, strength, and camaraderie.

When I first joined the team freshman year, I was met with a mix of emotions, excitement, nervousness, and determination all bundled together. But those feelings soon turned into pure exhilaration. I found myself surrounded by a supportive community of coaches, teammates, and friends who shared the same passion for the game. Freshman year we went 9-4 and won sectionals for the first time in over 17 years, in more time since my football coach went to my school. By sophomore year we are 12-0 so far, about to go to regionals and play the same team we played last year.

Football isn't just about physical strength and agility, it's about mental prowess, strategies, and teamwork. As a female player, you’ll quickly learn the importance of these skills on and off the field. You’ll gain confidence in your abilities, push your boundaries and develop leadership qualities that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Sure, there might be times when you encounter challenges or face stereotypes and doubts from others. I have all of these things all the time and there will be times when you want to just give up. But let me assure you, every obstacle becomes an opportunity for growth. Your dedication, hard work, and passion will break down barriers and pave the way for others aspiring to join the game.

Being a part of the team will teach you invaluable life lessons. It’ll instill in you the importance of discipline, time management, and resilience. The bond you’ll share with your teammates is exceptional. You’ll celebrate victories together, support each other through defeats, and create lasting friendships that go beyond the field.

Remember, you have every right to pursue your dreams and interests, regardless of what society may dictate. You are capable, strong, and deserving of every opportunity that comes your way.

So, to all the young girls who dream of tackling, passing, and scoring touchdowns, believe in yourself, work hard, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Your passion for the game is what matters most.

Embrace the journey, relish every moment, and enjoy the thrill of the game. You are a force to be reckoned with and the field is your stage to shine.

With love and encouragement,

Tanner Berry
