"The Keep Her in the Game Grant allows me to continue playing the sport I love with the proper protective gear. My first season, I had to borrow a helmet that didn’t fit, which may have led to a concussion, reinforcing the need for safe, well-fitted equipment. Balancing player fees, travel costs, and quality gear has been a challenge, but this grant helps remove that barrier.
Now, as a Physical Education teacher and a coach for Special Olympics athletes in Detroit, I share my love of football and encourage more women to play. Thank you for this opportunity to stay in the game and inspire others to do the same!"
Keep Sydney in the Game: Her Story, in Her Words
"As an Adapted Physical Education teacher in Detroit, I was throwing the ball around with my students when a coworker suggested I try out for a local women’s football team. I’ve always loved the game, so I gave it a shot—and I haven’t looked back since. Playing has reignited my passion for the sport and given me the chance to connect with an amazing group of women who share the same love for football. This year marks my second season, and I’m excited to keep growing as a player and teammate.
The moment I knew football was my game was the first time I stepped onto the field in full uniform and made my first hit. The sound of the pads colliding, the adrenaline rushing through me, and the cheers from my teammates made it unforgettable. It was in that moment I realized the power and teamwork behind the sport, and I felt like I truly belonged. That first hit solidified my love for the game and showed me I was capable of so much more than I imagined.
One of the challenges I’ve faced playing football is balancing the demands of the sport with the rest of my life, from work to family responsibilities—it requires a lot of time management and dedication. The cost of equipment, travel, and other expenses can add up quickly, making it another obstacle to navigate. On top of that, the time commitment for practices, games, and training is significant, but I’ve learned to prioritize and make sacrifices to pursue my passion. Despite these challenges, the camaraderie and support within the team make it all worth it, as we tackle these obstacles together both on and off the field.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as an athlete is how to embrace challenges and adapt to new experiences. Coming into football, a completely new sport to me, the learning curve was immense as I had to quickly pick up the game, play both sides of the ball, and master multiple positions. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to learn fast, stay humble, and trust the process. This journey has not only made me a better athlete but also taught me the value of persistence, focus, and being open to growth in all areas of life."
Post Award Update:
"This is the first time I’ve played with a helmet that fits and it was amazing, I felt safer and less distracted!"
